Past Fishing Club Events

Thursday's conditions were rough with steady 10-15kt Northeast winds and some higher gusts, but four ocean county schools (Barnegat, Lacey, MATES, Southern Regional) participated in their annual surf fishing competition.  The schools were led by fishing club advisors: Brett Taylor-Barnegat, Bob McMaster-Southern, Dave Werner-MATES, and Jason Muermann-Lacey.  This is the seventh year for the competition which originally started between Barnegat and Southern in 2009.  Village Harbor Fishing club donated a trophy for the 1st competition, and it is given and held by the winner each year, similar to the Stanley Cup in the NHL. This year's competition was tough with only 1 fish amongst 40 participants (10 per team). Freshman Taylor Swisstack caught the tournament winning fish, a 29.5 inch Bluefish, putting Barnegat HS on the board.  With the rough surf conditions (10-20mph winds and rain), it was the only fish caught and secured the victory.  Final score:  Barnegat-29.5, Southern-0, MATES-0, Lacey-0.  This was Barnegat High School's second victory (2011, 2015) and the team will retain the trophy until next year's competition.  Great job by all the kids and advisors in the tournament.  A scholarship was also donated by the Long Beach Island Foundation to the winning team in the tournament.

Lastly, a huge thank you to Fisherman's Headquarters, Creekside Outfitters, and Tony's Bait & Tackle for donating bait for the tournament and also to the Barnegat Light Heavers for officiating the event.

The Barnegat High School Fishing club was aboard the Carolynn Ann III for a 4hr Striped Bass trip with close to 20 students participating in the trip.  First and foremost - the upmost thanks to the crew of the Carolynn Ann III for putting us on fish and making the kids hot dogs during the afternoon trip.  Nice job as always by the crew of the Carolynn Ann III.

Regarding the fish, we had multiple students come tight on striped bass from 10 to 27lbs, in addition to a few yellow-eyed monsters (aka bluefish) via snag n drop fishing.  Cole DeAngelo (Sr.) and Nick DeGennaro (Jr.) tied for the heaviest fish on the boat, each catching stripers weighing 27lbs.  Both students walked away with approximately $50-$60 in S&S bucktail products that were purchased by the fishing club thru our fundraised money.  A great job by all members of the club.  We will be shooting for a tautog/blackfish trip prior to our Thanksgiving break and will again provide an S&S bucktail prize for the winner of the biggest blackfish.

Speaking of fundraisers - we will host our 6th Annual Fisherman's Fleamarket which will occur on Saturday, December 13, 2014 from 9am to 1pm at Barnegat High School.  We have vendors bringing tons of different fishing gear, clothing, etc to the event.  We even have a few fishing-related vendors such as shark-tooth jewelry and local home-made chocolates.  Admission is $4 with door prizes every 15minutes, and all proceeds go directly to the students of the club to help run our fishing trips, scholarships, food bank donations, etc.

The club provides a unique opportunity to students of Barnegat High school to get involved in a "different" way and possibly learn or seed a lifelong passion for fishing and the outdoors".

"We got the trip in" said Barnegat High School fishing club advisor Capt. Brett Taylor - amongst waterspouts and threatening skies - 20 students of Barnegat H.S. fishing trip were aboard the Carolyn Ann III for an afternoon sea bass trip.  The crew of the Carolynn Ann III put the kids on the meat - with sea bass after sea bass coming over the rail.  The first two spots had a mix of keepers (12.5 inches and above) and throwbacks with an occasional porgy and triggerfish.  The last spot produced mostly keepers with senior Cole DeAngelo being the high hook catching a total of 9 keeper sea bass to 17inches, but the "pool" winner was freshman first-time fisherman Ashley Cloke catching a nice 5lb triggerfish.  Through the club's annual fisherman's fleamarket held the second Saturday of December (this year: December 13, 2014) - the club has purchased gear to give out on the fishing trips.  Ashley won $50 in various jigs from S&S Bucktails.

A hugh thanks to the captain (Will) and crew of the Carolynn (Patty, Gina, Mikey) - they did an amazing job putting every single student on fish.  The kids loved it - we will be back in a few weeks!!

The fall fishing trip was intended to be our annual Fall Sea Bass trip, but the Sea Bass weren't cooperating so the Captain and Crew recommended we jig for Weakfish and Croakers.  The decision was a good one, because all 26 students caught fish.  The students used fresh spearing on high low rigs, AVA27's, and Gulp to boat the fish.  With Justin Geduldick catching the biggest weakest (17 inches) and winning a club Old Harbor Outfitters dryfit shirt and a rod & reel combo.  Great job by all the students, chaperones, and crew.

5th Annual Surf Fishing Competition Quad (Barnegat, Lacey, MATES, and Southern Regional)

Barnegat High School's fishing club was out last Thursday aboard the Carolynn Ann III fishing for it's annual fall sea bass trip prior to the season closure.  "We had 28 students from freshman to seniors, and 4 adult chaperones fishing for sea bass and they did a great job catching." said club advisor Capt. Brett Taylor.  Over 80 keepers were caught with some approaching 22 inches.  Senior Jesse Moore won the club pool catching a nice 5-6lb Triggerfish.  Jesse won a Daiwa rod and reel combination donated by Harvey Cedars retired resident Samual Lenox.  Big thanks to the captain and crew of the Carolynn Ann III for consistently putting us over fish during all of club's fishing trips.  The students will be gearing up for our next fall trip for Striped Bass and Bluefish, and getting ready for our 4th Annual Fisherman's Fleamarket at Barnegat High School (December 8th, 9am to 1pm).

Huge Win - Barnegat beats Southern and Lacey to capture trophy for 2011-2012 school year.

BHS Surf Fishing Team    trophy

On Friday (June 10th)  Barnegat HS, Southern Regional HS, and Lacey HS competed in the 3rd Annual Beating at the Beach on the Barnegat Light Beach. It is surf-fishing competition between the three schools and we follow the Association of Surf Angling Clubs rules (ASAC).

ASAC rules do not allow any "trash" fish and 1pt per inch. For the two prior years, Southern Regional advised by Bob McMaster (previously Darren Dorris) and Jason Hoch has won the surf-fishing competition. This year a ton of fish were caught ranging from blues, fluke, dogfish, and sea robins, but only game fish score points.

The competition was literally won in the last 3 minutes of competition, with Barnegat HS catching two 14" fluke increasing our team score to 228pt. Southern Regional had a respectable score of 206pt, and Lacey followed with 75pt.

Some notable catches were a nice 19" fluke by Barnegat's Kyle Kostka, 18" fluke by Barnegat's Jake Kovacs, and a 20" bluefish by Southern's Chris Furtuna. The total tally of score-able fish caught was: 23 fluke and 8 bluefish.

Barnegat HS advisor Captain Brett Taylor will be presented the trophy at the Village Harbor Fishing club's July meeting and the trophy will be held by Barnegat HS until next year's competition. The trophy has been donated by Village Harbor Fishing club since the start of the surf-fishing competition.

I personally would like to thank Greg Cudnik and the crew at Fisherman's Headquarters for supplying the winning bait and supporting Barnegat's fishing club since it's inception, and my co-advisor Tom Duralek. Additional thanks go to the Barnegat Heaver's Surf Fishing Club for running up and down the beach measuring all of the fish, and Tony's Bait and Tackle for supplying bait to Southern Regional.

The Barnegat Fishing Club completed its 3rd annual charter trip aboard the Carolynn Ann III out of Barnegat Light, NJ.  Twenty-eight students ventured out to the rich waters off of Barnegat Light to fish for sea bass, blackfish (tautog) and porgies.  The captain and crew of the Carolynn Ann III had a tough time putting everyone on fish because of the cold bottom water temps.  Although the fish weren't entirely cooperating - we boated close to 30 fish with about 10 keepers.  Great job by everybody and we're looking forward to our next trip in the fall.  Hope everybody has a great summer and we'll see you in September.

A special thanks to our sponsors: Quantum Fishing Products (Zebco) www.quantumfishing.com and Fisherman's Headquarters (Ship Bottom, NJ) www.fishermansheadquarters.com

The Barnegat High School Fishing Club was aboard the Carolyn Ann III (Banegat Light, NJ) for its 1st fishing charter trip as a cllub.

All of the 33 members aboard caught fish, bringing home approximately 150 keeprers. The majority of the fish were sea bass, although bluefish, spiny dogfish, and progies were also brought aboard.

Everyone had a great time and we hope to do it again in the Spring for Night-Time Bluefish. Barnegat High School Fishing Club thanks the captain and crew of the Carolyn Ann III for their great work!

Fall Fishing Charter 2009

The Barnegat Fishing Club completed its 2nd annual fall charter trip aboard the Carolynn Ann III out of Barnegat Light, NJ.  Twenty-two students ventured out to the rich waters off of Barnegat Light to fish for sea bass, blackfish (tautog) and porgies.  The captain and crew of the Carolynn Ann III put everyone on fish, with the entire group limiting out on blackfish and catching a boat-load of sea bass and porgies.   The biggest fish caught was an estimated 7-8lb blackfish by the father-son team (Mr. Peltier/Jake).  Great job by everybody and we're looking forward to another trip.

Spring Surf Fishing Competition 09'

Southern Regional 26 pts and Barnegat 19pts.

We were in the lead most on the competition by David Frank's 19in Bluefish, until Southern struck with about an hour left with a 26 inch Striped Bass.  Congrats to all the fishing club members who participated in the competition.  Now, we have to redeem ourselves.  Looking forward to 2009-2010 school year.

Hope you enjoy some of our pics.
